After Tottenham’s win over Chelsea at the end of March it saw Mauricio Pochettino’s men move eight points clear of last season’s Premier League champions. A gap which looks incredibly comfortable in the race for the top four and the Champions League reward that would come with.
Tottenham fans would have every right to dream that a third straight appearance in Europe’s top club competition was on the horizon, a dream that looked like becoming more of a reality by the time they had followed that win up with success over Stoke at the Bet365 Stadium.
That saw the gap extended to 11 points with Chelsea set to play a day later, Antonio Conte’s men would be involved in another London derby with West Ham this time providing the opposition. With the Blues at home once more the belief was that would go on to earn maximum points and reduce the arrears back down to 8 points.
However, there was a twist in the tale at Stamford Bridge as they were held to a 1-1 draw by the Hammers, a draw that saw Tottenham’s gap over Chelsea sit at 10 points with seven league matches to go. Now if you were a betting man and looking for the best football betting tips then the smart money would certainly be on Tottenham to get themselves over the line and ward off any threat from Chelsea.
But it seems we might just have a twist in the tale, after clearing the hurdle of Chelsea over the Easter Holiday it was felt that the only over difficult fixture that the North London outfit would have was the visit of then champions elect Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s men arrived at Wembley in the midst of a rare blip of form, one that saw lose twice to Liverpool in Europe while also having their title winning celebrations ruined by crosstown rivals Manchester United and due to that it was felt that Spurs could extend their unbeaten run to 15 matches.
Only it was a rare off day for Spurs this season as they suffered another defeat at the hands of Manchester City, the runaway league leaders also beat them last December so the two losses actually book ended Tottenham’s impressive unbeaten run.
Because of that defeat and the fact that Chelsea came from two goals down to beat Southampton earlier the same day, the gap in the race for the top four was cut to seven points. A small glimmer of hope but still a sizeable enough gap to give Totteham no real concerns.
But those concerns could well increase due to goings on at the AMEX Stadium last night. Tottenham would have looked to have bounced back in ideal fashion after defeat at the weekend, unfortunately for them though they were held by Brighton with the two teams playing out a 1-1 draw.
A result that will give Chelsea hope of getting back in the race for fourth, they travel to Burnley on Thursday knowing that if they win at Turf Moor then the gap will be back to five points. The same margin as before Chelsea played host to Tottenham at the end of March.
Unquestionably Tottenham are still in the box seat but the fact that they have not won any of their last two league matches will just remind everyone connected with the club that they are not over the line just yet and there is still some work to be done in they are to secure a place in the top four.
